26th October 2017 is the centenary of the death of 2nd Lieutenant Leonard Harvey Nicholls who died in action at the battle of Passchendale. Leonard Nicholls is commemorated on the family headstone at Agecroft Cemetery and on the Tyne Cot memorial in Belgium. Members of the Friends of Salford Cemeteries acknowledged this poignant anniversary by placing a wreath on the Nicholls’s family grave and reading details of Leonard Nicholls’s life. https://www.facebook.com/pg/agecroftchapelrestoration/posts/?ref=page_internal
The Chapel Restoration group hosted an event at Agecroft cemetery as part of the annual Heritage Open Days weekend. The event, the first for the cemetery and also for the restoration group, was a great success with large numbers attending eager to know about the future of this iconic building. We were able to garner the ideas and comments of visitors and talks from members of the group explained the importance of the chapel within the context of the design of the cemetery and its buildings. There was also the opportunity to look at some of the cemetery records and behind the scenes view of the crematorium.
